OTHO GIRL DIES ON RAIN-SLICK BLACKTOP

Coalville - A 16-year-old Otho girl was killed and two other persons were injured in a near head-on collision on a Webster County road 1 1/2 miles north of Coalville Friday afternoon.

Lori Lee Loehr was dead on arrival at Trinity Regional Hospital.  She died of massive head injuries.  Miss Loehr was a passenger in a car driven by Jeffrey S. Jensen, 16, Otho.  According to authorities, Jensen and the driver of the other vehicle, Danny Hammersland, 28, 234 J. Street, Fort Dodge, both received leg injuries and were admitted to the hospital.

The accident, involving a car and a pickup, was reported to the Iowa State Patrol at 4:21 p.m.  The Jensen vehicle was southbound on county blacktop P-59 when it collided with the northbound pickup driven by Hammersland.

Patrol authorities said Jensen told them he had just passed another southbound car at the time of the accident.  Hammerland told authorities he hit his brakes to avoid a collision and lost control of his vehicle and it hit the oncoming car.  The road was wet and it was raining when the accident happened.

Patrol authorities said there was a witness to the accident, and the investigation is continuing, but no charges were pending Friday night.

The two teenagers were appartenly on their way home from school in Fort Dodge at the time of the accident.  School books were found lying in the back seat of the Jensen vehicle.

Both vehicles were demolished: The right front corners of both vehicles bore the brunt of the impact and the camper on the back of the pickup was torn off and lying along the side of the road.  The contents of the camper were strewn around the area.

Traffic was stopped at the scene of the accident for nearly an hour, and at one time the line of stopped cars extended more than a mile.

Services for Miss Loehr are pending at Bruce Funeral Home.

Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Sheryll Loehr, Otho; father, Bob Loehr, 1518 2nd Ave. No.; step-father, Dan R. McCaffery, New London; brothers; Bobby, Rick, Timmy and Toby, all at home; grandparents: Mr & Mrs. Clifford Loehr and Mr. & Mrs Willis King, all of Fort Dodge; and Mr. & Mrs. William Rowe, Otho, and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Cora H. Voss, Dayton.

Miss Loehr was a sophomore at Fort Dodge Senior High School.

I remember Lori, she was in my Drivers Ed car. Lori was very sweet and very quiet. I think Lori passed away when we were in 10th grade. If I remember right Lori was in a car accident on the Otho Highway. Her car went into the ditch. Very sweet girl...
